EQUALITY PROGRAM | HEC Lausanne (UNIL) is pleased to welcome the new laureate of the Female Career Award, Professor Candace Arai Yano, University of California, Berkeley, on June 14. She will be rewarded for her brilliant career as a researcher in the field of operations management and her involvement in the education of the next generation of scholars.
A pioneer in the field of operations management
Professor Yano's academic career began in the 1980s. She was one of the first women to break into the field of operations management. Her contributions include dealing with various sources of uncertainty in production, inventory management and logistics, as well as interdisciplinary problems involving operations and marketing. Today, she has more than 6500 citations on google scholar.
Candace Arai Yano is a professor at the University of California (Berkeley, USA) with a dual affiliation in industrial engineering and operations research. Her expertise is widely recognized in the academic world, both in her role in various scientific societies such as the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), as well as in her editorial responsibilities in the top scientific journals in her field.
A woman who perfectly embodies the values of the Female Career Award
Professor Yano was recommended by the Operations Department at HEC Lausanne. "Prof. Yano is an exceptional woman, both from a professional and human point of view. While she has had an outstanding career as a researcher in the field of operations management, her contributions to the education of young people in general, and her support of many female doctoral students in particular, are just as important, if not more so, in the context of the Female Career Award," comments Prof. Ann van Ackere, Director of the Operations Department at HEC Lausanne.
Prof. Yano co-founded WORMS (Forum for Women in OR/MS of INFORMS) in 1995 and is actively involved in the activities of this group. In 2008, she received the "Award for the Advancement of Women in OR/MS". In the same year, she was awarded the IEOR Professor of the Year Award for the quality of her teaching.
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday 14 June on the UNIL campus. On this occasion, the laureate will share the results of one of her research projects conducted with her co-author Bo Liao, during her conference entitled "Store Brand Positioning and Pricing in the Presence of Retail Competition".
