The Unité de pédagogie médicale (UPMed) organises a half-day symposium on the topic of professional identity and means to support its development in trainees in healthcare, on August 29th, 2024 at the CHUV.
Identity development in healthcare professionals: Why and how should we care?
Health-professions education “is as much about the development of a professional identity as it is about knowledge learning” (L. Monrouxe).
Professional Identity Development (PID) is a continuous and dynamic process that evolves over time, in which clinical and non-clinical experiences, expectations and environmental factors merge with individual values, beliefs and obligations. While PID has been associated with career success, a mismatch between personal orientations and expectations towards the profession has been associated with anxiety, frustration, and feelings of inadequacy. PID requires one to undertake a socialisation journey, in which healthcare education plays a role in cultivating a supportive learning environment.
But finally, what is professional identity and how can we concretely support its development in our trainees ?
We will have the opportunity to listen to and exchange with international and national academic leaders and specialists in the field, but also to hear the first-hand experience of students.
The program will feature oral presentations, and a round table discussion.
