The RGS-IBG Annual International Conference regularly attracts geographers from around the world. This year, the conference is taking place in London from 29 August to 1 September 2023. The call for applications for the Early career researcher Mentoring event is now open.
GENERAL CONTEXT
Climate change is causing significant changes in high mountain areas, with strong impacts on tourism and recreational activities. Temporal and spatial reduction of snow cover, glacier retreat, permafrost degradation and related hazards, summer droughts and heat waves are prominent examples. In the face of these changes, both supply and demand for mountain tourism need to adapt. Sustainable adaptation aims to reduce the vulnerability of stakeholders. However, inaction or maladaptive strategies will increase vulnerability to climate change. To understand the outcomes of adaptation strategies, social and environmental sciences are crucial. Although geographical research allows the development of holistic approaches that integrate both perspectives, these approaches are still underdeveloped and deserve special attention.
Accordingly, the aim of this session is to discuss the relevance and the methods to be developed for interdisciplinary research to support and inform adaptation strategies for mountain tourism and recreation under climate change. An initial panel discussion will be followed by a mentoring event for early career researchers. The aim of this mentoring event is to allow an in-depth discussion between the senior researcher and the ECR on the relevance and methods of developing interdisciplinary research to inform adaptation strategies for mountain tourism and recreation under climate change.
SESSION DESCRIPTION
The ECR Mentoring event offers early-career researchers the opportunity to be mentored by a senior researcher in the field of tourism and climate change adaptation. ECR Mentoring will follow a panel format, bringing together four senior researchers working on adaptation issues in mountain tourism and recreation. The mentors will provide guidance by sharing their own experiences in bringing together social and environmental sciences. This mentoring event aims to help develop the skills of ECRs in a supportive and non-judgmental way. The ECR Mentoring Event will be a face-to-face event with a capacity of 20 ECRs.
The provisional program of ECR mentoring event is structured as follows:
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target group for the ECR mentoring event is PhD students and researchers in training who are looking for mentoring from experts in the field of mountain tourism and climate change adaptation who combine social and environmental sciences in their work.
