On August 1, 2022, Dzhamilya Nigmatulina joined the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Lausanne, as tenure-track assistant professor. Her areas of expertise are political economy and development economics.
How do political connections of firms and corruption affect allocation of resources in the economy and output? How can political ties be sustained for a prolonged period of time? How do spatial frictions and development of cities affect allocation of resources and growth?
Professor Nigmatulina uses detailed micro data on firms and households to assess these questions on the micro level, as well as macro and trade models to assess aggregate macroeconomic effects of these frictions. Her research interests broadly relate to political economy and development economics.
Her work has been published in the Journal of Political Economy and the Journal of Urban Economics.
Before joining HEC Lausanne, Dzhamilya Nigmatulina completed her Ph.D. at London School of Economics and Political Science. Previously, she worked on the LSE and Oxford-based Urbanisation in Developing Countries research program funded by the World Bank, and in the Office of the Chief Economist at EBRD. Professor Nigmatulina holds a Master’s degree from Duke University and a Bachelor’s degree from Durham University.
Dzhamilya Nigmatulina is also an associate at the Centre for Economic Performance at the LSE.
