Each year, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™ at Clarivate publishes the Highly Cited Researchers listing. The scientists and social scientists included have demonstrated significant and broad influence, reflected in the publication of multiple papers frequently cited by their peers during the last decade.
Evaluation and scope
For the Highly Cited Researchers 2021 analysis, the papers surveyed were thus those published and cited during 2010 to 2020 and which at the end of 2020 ranked in the top 1% by citations for their Essential Science Indicators (ESI) field and year. The ESI is a database of science trend statistics drawn from over 12 million articles and 12,000 global journals.
Fields of influence
Researchers are selected for their exceptional influence and performance in one or more of 21 fields, or indeed for their cross-field impact, meaning substantial influence across several fields during the same period.
The 2021 ranking includes 6,602 Highly Cited Researchers – 3,774 in specific fields and 2,828 for cross-field performance.

Professor Coukos, Head of the Department of oncology UNIL CHUV and Director of the Ludwig Lausanne branch, along with professors Olivier Michielin and Daniel Speiser are cited in the cross-field category. Pr Solange Peters is cited in the clinical medicine category.
