This newsletter opens with an interview with Karin Hehlen, Head of the Guidance and Career Service, about the results of the phone survey "How are you doing? "which is carried out every year among the newcomers at UNIL. You will then find several technical information given by the CSE - Teaching Support Centre, concerning the spring semester: an update of Moodle UNIL on Saturday 13 February, a reminder on course recording and the loan of microphones, not forgetting a rich offer of webinars and lab-online on distance learning.
"The social link between UNIL and its students is fundamental"
The Guidance and Careers Service published this month the results of the "How are you doing? "survey, which took the pulse of the newcomers who started their studies in September 2020. Read our interview with Head of Service Karin Hehlen.
Moodle UNIL version update
On Saturday 13 February, an update of the Moodle UNIL platform to version 3.9 of the software will be carried out. Access to Moodle UNIL will therefore be suspended between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm at the latest. This technical intervention does not concern MoodleExam.
This update offers a visually simplified interface, thanks to a clear and modern layout and colour scheme. It also makes a few practical changes for users, including :
- A new, more intuitive interface for adding content;
- A grouping of all course administration options in one place;
- Quick access to all sections of the course and to the list of participants, for you and your students.
This update has no impact on the availability, resources and other settings of your existing courses. However, we remind you that access to Moodle is now done via your Switch Edu-ID account.
All the new features of this version will be presented in the tutorial area of Moodle 3.9 from Monday 15th February. Click here to access it.
For those of you who would like a quick overview of the new features (10 minutes) and would like to ask questions, you can attend one of the CSE's Café Moodle sessions, which will take place at 11:30 am on the following days:

Course capture
Although distance learning will be resumed this semester (communications on this subject are planned for the university community in the near future), it is recommended that teachers teaching in rooms equipped with an A or B recording system physically stream from these rooms, as they ensure optimum broadcasting and recording quality. Their use is also systematically requested for courses with more than 300 students.
Each faculty is in the process of completing a table confirming the use of the classrooms reserved and equipped with type A and B recording systems for this semester. This will enable the programming of the necessary encodings in connection with the automatic launch of recordings in these rooms.
For those who have not yet worked in these rooms, we are organising two remote demonstration sessions:
You can register for these demos here: https://conference.unil.ch/cours/cse.
All necessary guides and information are also available here: https://www.unil.ch/coronavirus/teach#captation-des-cours-1.
Loan of microphones
For those who wish to do so, the CSE organises microphone loans, as it was the case during the last autumn semester. You will be able to pick up your microphone on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by appointment. Please send your request to elearning@unil.ch.
CSE webinars and lab-online for the spring semester 2021
The courses offered by the CSE cover the essential principles of distance learning (design, animation, digital tools, etc.), plus 12 new in-depth courses. They cover teamwork for teaching teams, dissertation support, inclusive pedagogy, additional ways of assessing learning and learning theories; all of which are distance-learning proof.
You can consult the catalogue of our offer here.
