To open this tenth "Teach" newsletter, Vice-Rector Martial Pasquier speaks about the system set up to support researchers on fixed-term contracts. This is followed by an interview with the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Criminal Justice and Public Administration who shares his point of view on the crisis, as well as an interview with the Deputy Director of the Teaching Support Centre (CSE) and President of the UNIL Council. You will also be able to consult new tutorials prepared by the CSE and important information related to the reopening of the campus, among others. Finally, and because "Life goes on", we are covering the fourth edition of the artistic and scientific image contest [Figure 1.A.].
"The University takes responsibility for young scientists"
The crisis has slowed down or even made it impossible to continue some research work. In order to support the members of the "corps intermédiaire", who have a fixed-term contract, the Rectorate allows their appointment to be extended for a period of two months, subject to certain conditions. Details from Martial Pasquier, Vice-Rector in charge of the "Human Resources and Finance" dicastery. Read the interview.
Within the deaneries
Laurent Moreillon leads the Faculty of Law, Criminal Justice and Public Administration. How does he see the current situation? Read the article.
"This period of crisis is expected to change education"
Professors and students have had to adapt to distance learning courses and prepare for off-campus exams. In this crisis situation, what are the priorities of the Teaching Support Centre (CSE)? Interview with its Deputy Director, Marine Antille, who is also Chair of the Conseil de l’UNIL.

Campus access: new details
Access to the Dorigny campus remains highly restricted.
For students, only a visit to the campus due to the use of the BCU loan service in the Unithèque and Internef buildings is accepted, and only for as long as this takes. The self-service loan, the reading rooms and the UNIL buildings are closed.
For staff members, explicit authorisation from the hierarchy is still required to carry out on campus an essential activity that cannot be carried out from home.
From now on, on-site presence schedules are established in advance by the hierarchical superiors and validated by the corresponding faculties or services, before being communicated to UNISEP. Persons whose arrival is indicated on a validated schedule no longer need to register with UNISEP.
For others, however (for example, a teleworking employee who needs to pick up some things from his or her office), the usual procedure applies: ask for permission from his or her superiors, then call UNISEP (021 692 20 00) when he or she arrives on campus and when he or she leaves.
For those employees who wish, masks are now available at one of the four distribution points: the Anthropole (from 11am to 2pm), at the Annexe de la Mouline (all day), as well as at the Biophore and the Génopode. A limit is set at two masks per person per day.
Eating at la Banane is possible again
The Unithèque cafeteria and restaurant have reopened since May 11th. The requirements of the health authorities, especially the social distance and the reduced density of occupants, are scrupulously respected. Please note that payment in cash is no longer possible: only Campuscard cards and, now, debit cards are accepted. The cafeterias are only open to food service clients for as long as their consumption requires. Therefore, microwaves and picnic areas are not accessible. As such, the cafeterias are not an alternative study space to the closed reading areas of the libraries.
Currently, cafeterias are open in the morning until about 2:00 p.m. As opening hours may change frequently, please visit unil.ch/restos.
Tutorials
Several new tutorials for UNIL teachers are available this week:
A Moodle tutorial space that gets richer and richer
The Moodle tutorials area has been expanded with new sections related to more advanced features. These will allow you to get more information and tips on how to use the tools available in our Moodle-UNIL platform to communicate or offer testing activities to your students.
Eleven new tutorials on advanced uses of Moodle are also available in the Moodle tutorial playlist.
Extension of access to COURSERA
Free access to the MOOCs catalogue on COURSERA is extended until September 26th for UNIL members. As a reminder, it is possible for teachers and their faculties and schools to obtain for their students’ full access to the MOOCs COURSERA catalogue which contains more than 4000 courses.
Information for these accesses or requests can be sent to elearning@unil.ch.
Resumption of teaching evaluations by students
From Monday 18 May, the evaluation of teaching by the students will be able to resume with the help of adapted tools, taking into account the adaptations made during the distance learning period and the organisation of the teaching as a whole. All the concrete details and the form to request the implementation of an evaluation - exclusively online - will be presented on the CSE's website from May 18th. In the meantime, the whole evaluation team of the CSE is at your disposal to answer your questions and to assist you in this process: cse-eval@unil.ch.
This information does not concern the teachings of the Medical School. The evaluation of these teachings by the students is under the responsibility of the Medical Pedagogy Unit.
BCUL: reopening of loan counters
Since Monday 11 May, the loan counters of the Unithèque, Internef, Riponne and HEP Vaud sites of the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne are again open, Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 6 pm (5 pm for the HEP Vaud site). The Provence and Renens sites welcome you by appointment (bcul-provence@bcu.unil.ch ; bcul-renens@bcu.unil.ch). But please note: these reopenings come with special conditions. Find all the useful information on www.unil.ch/coronavirus/work or on the BCUL website.
Life goes on
The fourth edition of [Figure 1.A.] is launched.
Explore the links between science and art. This is the promise of the artistic and scientific image competition [Figure 1.A.] organized by the APNS of UNIL (Association for Postdocs in Natural Sciences), which opens this month for its fourth edition. This year's theme for the "Behind the Scenes" image category is: "Science in Isolation, Corona Months". This topic echoes the #ScienceInIsolation initiative launched in March by the same organizers to invite confined researchers to tell their stories through images and videos on social networks.
Previously restricted to scientists from a limited number of faculties, the competition is now open to all members of the UNIL community (students, researchers, employees), but also to universities around the world. Participants can submit a maximum of three entries until 30 July 2020. All types of image acquisition, data visualization, graphics, maps, photography are accepted. A selection of 30 works will be exhibited from 12 to 31 October 2020 at Galerie spot2b in Lausanne. More information on the conditions of participation.
