Wi-Fi : use eduroam, end of secure-unil
We’re simplifying our Wi-Fi at UNIL for better performance and roaming. Eduroam will be the unique Wi-Fi network for the whole UNIL community. The secure-unil network will be discontinued on 31st October 2019.
What is eduroam?
Eduroam is a global Wi-Fi roaming service for universities, colleges and research institutions. Today, academic life combines with mobility every day: you study at UNIL and you may go to a conference at EPFL or visit a university library in Paris, and eduroam gives you access to the local Wi-Fi network regardless.
This shared roaming service began in 2003. It is based on a free and mutual exchange between member institutions. Today, the eduroam community offers Wi-Fi access in more than 10,000 locations across more than 100 countries: universities, schools, research centres, and a growing number of public places (libraries, hospitals, even the Geneva airport). Your eduroam ID allows you to access it, since UNIL is part of the eduroam community.
And at UNIL?
Until the summer of 2019, UNIL broadcasted both eduroam and secure-unil, with the possibility of using either one. Since secure-unil and eduroam offer the same technical characteristics, the same performance and the same level of security, they are therefore duplicates.
For this reason, UNIL will follow the path already adopted by a growing number of universities by keeping only the eduroam Wi-Fi.
How is it going to happen?
On 31st October 2019, the secure-unil Wi-Fi network will be discontinued, and eduroam will be the only Wi-Fi network for the UNIL community.
In a transitional phase from 22nd July to the 30th October 2019, the secure-unil network will still be available for people who already have it configured, but it will no longer be offered to new users. They will need to connect to eduroam.
What about the public-unil network?
This network is intended for people visiting the UNIL campus who are not part of the eduroam community. By using this network you will not have access to some of the internal resources of the UNIL.
How to configure eduroam Wi-Fi?
If you already use eduroam Wi-Fi, or have already configured it, no changes are necessary.
If you have not set it up yet, do it now:
- with eduroam CAT, a configuration help application, information available on unil.ch/wifi
- with a manual configuration, by selecting eduroam from the list of available networks on your device; if necessary, manually accept the certificate eduroam.unil.ch (QuoVadis Root CA2 certificate)
IMPORTANT: to login to eduroam, use your UNIL username followed by @unil.ch, such as:
- email@example.com (example for Kim Durand: firstname.lastname@example.org)
