The Urban Geography Commission: Urban Challenges in a Complex World won the 2018 IGU Commissions Excellence Award.
The IGU Commissions Excellence Award Committee unanimously nominates the Urban Geography Commission: Urban Challenges in a Complex World for the IGU Commissions Excellence Award 2018.
The Urban Commission is very active and highly productive. It participates consistently in IGU Congresses and Regional and Thematic Conferences, organizing successful sessions on urban challenges in a complex world. The Commission always organizes a great number of sessions during IGU Congresses and Conferences. The Commission has a strong tradition of collaboration with IGU Commissions as well as with organizations outside IGU. The Commission collaborated in 2018 with several IGU Commissions in the Thematic Conference in Moscow and organized seven sessions at that conference. The Commission organized 15 sessions at the Regional Conference in Québec, jointly with the CAG. In 2018 the Commission published the outcome of its meetings in an edited book published by Springer. The Commission has a well-developed communication network involving a website, mailing list with almost 1,000 urban geographer members, and a Facebook group. The Commission is very active in promoting the participation of young and emerging scholars. It has established a Young Scholars Committee and organizes both a young scholars competition and travel grants for young and emerging scholars, particular those from developing countries.
