The nature of leadership examined by Prof. John Antonakis
John Antonakis, Professor of the Faculty of Business and Economics at UNIL and an expert in leadership, has just published the 3rd edition of his book The Nature of Leadership. Edited jointly with Professor David V. Day (Claremont McKenna College, United States), it includes contributions from eminent and upcoming researchers in the field. Recognized as a reference work in universities and a real treasure chest for students and teachers alike, this 3rd edition examines all aspects of leadership, while addressing a wide audience.
Viewed as one of the most comprehensive textbooks in the field, The Nature of Leadership has established a solid reputation, and this 3rd edition should appeal to anyone who is passionate about leadership. The book begins with an overview of the main schools of leadership, as well as examining individual differences, followers, relational leadership and team leadership. It then moves onto a number of important and timely subjects, such as social cognition, gender, power, identity, culture and entrepreneurial leadership. A chapter is devoted to the theme of corporate social responsibility and leadership, written by none other than Guido Palazzo, professor at HEC Lausanne and an expert in business ethics.
Authors John Antonakis and David Day conclude by exploring the philosophical and methodological questions in leadership, including ethics and corporate social responsibility. “This book is at the leading edge of research in the field of leadership and takes a very progressive approach, dealing with themes such as gender, evolutionary foundations and perception biases,” explains Prof. Antonakis. The authors also introduce a touch of symbolism with the photograph on the cover of the book, which shows a herd of elephants led by a female. “In the elephant population, the oldest and therefore most experienced female is the leader of the group.” The perfect illustration for a more than topical theme!
This new, fully updated edition is also more accessible and user-friendly than ever, with new illustrations, examples, statistics, case studies and recommended videos. Each chapter starts with an anecdote to illustrate the topic, along with a mini case study to help teachers address it from a practical perspective. The authors are already planning to publish a 4th edition of the book in a few years’ time: interested readers take note!
