The Federal Council has appointed Joël Wagner, Professor of Actuarial Science at HEC Lausanne (UNIL), as a member of the Occupational Pension Supervisory Commission (OPSC) with effect from 1 January 2018. The Faculty congratulates him on his appointment and is delighted that the professor’s expertise has been sought for such an important organization.
What is the OPSC?
The OPSC is an independent supervisory authority that is not bound by the instructions of parliament or the Federal Council. It is tasked with ensuring uniform supervision of the occupational benefits system. It exercises ultimate control over the eight regional authorities charged with direct supervision and has directive authority over them.
The OPSC has direct responsibility for supervising investment foundations, the guarantee fund and the suppletory institution. It is further responsible for certifying occupational benefits experts as well as asset managers working in this field.
Prof. Wagner’s expertise sought
Prof. Wagner’s main research interests are risk management and insurance. Among other things, his work analyzes the current challenges in the fields of life insurance and pensions (for example, managing assets and liabilities in old-age pensions, new life insurance products and funding for long-term care), calculating insurance premiums (for example, data analysis techniques), managing insurance (for example, the impact of new information technologies, market development and the processes used in multichannel distribution and claims management), as well as recent developments in the regulatory framework and reporting systems. His technical expertise, combined with his academic and professional experience in these fields will therefore be valuable assets for the Commission.
The Faculty congratulates him on his appointment!
